Aerating is recommended at least once per season at a minimum preferably in the fall when on a regular schedule.

In order to achieve a healthy green lawn grass must first have a healthy root systems to grow off of, when a healthy root system is in place this will cause less stress on your lawn over tough dry summers or cold winters while promoting healthy growth.

.

Aeration is a Key Component to Achieving a Healthy Lawn

for many reasons such as it  removes small plugs of grass and loosens up compacted soil and increases the airflow and oxygen down to the root system, this process will also increase water and nutrient infiltration to help build a solid root system and make your grass thrive.

Core aeration is also a great practice that is used to break up thatch before it becomes an issue damaging your turf.

A soil sample will be taken as needed to see what nutrients your soil is lacking.
At that time we can make a strong recommendation on the proper next steps to take to achieve a new healthy green lawn.

What if lawn repair isn't possible?

For more extreme cases when repairing lawn isn’t possible and your lawn is to far gone to repair and the only option is to install a completely new lawn we will go over the proper steps needed and discuss the price increase of going this route .
This process requires killing off any remaining lawn in the desired new lawn area, removing the current thatch layer  and grass and hauling it away, getting  down to bare dirt. At this time we will Harley rake the soil to loosen the soil and eliminate soil compaction, this process will  also  remove rocks, and we will pitch and grade the lawn to eliminate puddling. Any low spots or poor soil condition areas will be top dressed spreading topsoil as needed, we finish off our prep work  by hand raking and grading and prepping for hydro seeding  or sod.
If soil conditions are to harsh or sandy to work with we will discuss grading the areas with 6-8” of screened top and prepping the areas to be seeded.

sod installation ct

Sod is a great way to have instant grass. While it’s cost is generally double the price of traditional seeding methods it has many benefits and being ahead of the game your new lawn will be complete within days.
Even though sod is grown  it  still requires proper preparation before being  installed , at this time daily watering and starting on a fertilizing program after installation will be necessary so a proper root system can be built.

Proper Watering Techniques

Watering your lawn properly is a common mistake a lot of homeowners make when trying to maintain or achieve a nice lawn. Watering properly and signing up for a lawn care program work hand and hand with each other feeding off one in other being key components to achieving a green lawn.

While most of us understand that lawns and shrubs need water to survive the heat and maintain a healthy appearance, how much water is really required ? And common questions like am I watering enough, or am I watering to much can hopefully be answered below in our brief description on proper watering techniques.

lawn irrigation

Irrigation System

An automatic irrigation system is hands down one of the better investments you can make for your lawn and landscape if your goal is to have a lush green lawn and healthy plants. .

Yes it’s possible to accomplish this without an automatic irrigation system, however to maintain the proper amount of water coverage daily it will take a significant amount of time and work on your part.

Deep Watering

For an established lawn we recommend a Daily deep watering in the early morning for about 20 minutes to a half hour per zone depending on soil types. You should aim for 1.25” -2” of water per week depending on soil types. Note sandy soils with more sun will be on the higher end of the chart vs rich topsoil with an equal amount of sun and shade. A Deep morning watering will allow the grass to dry thoroughly throughout the day and have enough water to get through those hot summer days. New lawn watering: New lawns require more frequent watering at a lower duration usually 15 minutes per zone twice per day to keep the ground moist for seedlings to grow, this is required until a mature root system is formed typically after 45-60 days after being planted.

Typically trying to water in the early morning and late day/early evening around 6:00pm for new lawns is best. Ultimately the most important part is your lawns getting watered twice per day so whatever fits into your schedule within that time frame is great.

over-watering

Avoid Over Watering

Over watering can have damaging effects on your lawn, the proper amount of water is dependent on the soil type, grass types and sun or shade exposure followed by how much rain we get naturally . Watering to late at night can increase the chances of your lawn getting a fungal infection or disease. The proper amount of water should be in the 1”-2” range for the week.

If puddling occurs that is a common indication your watering to much and your watering system needs to be adjusted to a lower time setting to avoid puddling or run offs.

Common watering mistakes

The most common watering mistake we see is when a homeowner waters with a garden hose and spray nozzle in hand standing out there spraying the areas. This is better referred to as surface watering and while you think your watering your lawn and helping in reality this does absolutely nothing for your lawn except cause deeper issues and doesn’t feed your lawn properly. When surface watering 99% of the time the water evaporates before it gets down to the root system. Another fact about surface watering or (watering by hand) is that it actually promotes surface weed growth and encourages thatch

If puddling occurs that is a common indication your watering to much and your watering system needs to be adjusted to a lower time setting to avoid puddling or run offs.
